Arthur Leahy, honored with a street renaming in Staten Island, was the first city parks worker to die on the job in 1975. He was killed during a burglary attempt at LaTourette Park golf course. The renaming event commemorates not only his sacrifice but also that of his sons, one of whom died on 9/11 as a NYPD officer. City Councilman David Carr emphasized the importance of recognizing local heroes like Leahy and his family's efforts in ensuring he is not forgotten.
"It is so appropriate that we honor our local hometown heroes in this way, who, for the most part, are everyday, ordinary folks, common people, rendering uncommon service, and that's no exception in this case."
"The Leahy family and the Staten Island community lost a hero. We never wanted my dad to be forgotten, and that was a fear that we carried within us."
