The 'Israel Day on 5th' parade featured a mix of celebration and somber remembrance as thousands marched to honor Israel and demand the return of 58 remaining hostages held by Hamas. Despite the festive atmosphere, families like Ruby Chen's remain in anguish, with their loved ones separated for over 590 days. UJA Federation CEO Eric Goldstein emphasized the importance of community, reflecting on New York's Jewish population. While pride filled the streets, the continuing plight of hostages underscored the day's duality of joy and sorrow.
There's nothing more inspiring than coming out on this day and looking down 5th Avenue and recognizing that we've put together the largest Jewish community in the world outside of Israel, celebrating.
One year later, Chen is at his second Israel Day Parade, advocating for his son and all of the hostages to be brought back home.
