Despite the push for phonics and specific curricula, complaints arose about the dullness of the HMH Into Reading program. The administration has promised more flexibility and support for teachers, while also expressing confidence that improvements will come following this overhaul.
"We can't continue to do the same things we have been always doing and expect to get better results," he said at a press conference announcing the curriculum expansions in Brooklyn on Monday.
The education department announced some additional flexibility and coaching last fall after facing pressure from the teachers union.
