Tenisha Evans, a 24-year-old mother of twins, died two weeks after a C-section, leaving her family seeking answers regarding potential complications. After giving birth at St. John's Episcopal Hospital, Evans went home but was found unresponsive just 15 days later. Despite the family's belief that her death was connected to the surgery, they received no follow-up from the hospital. With concerns rising over maternal health, especially impacting Black and Brown women, the New York City Council initiated efforts to address the maternal mortality crisis through the Maternal Health Steering Committee.
When she came home from the hospital, nobody reached out, [asked] 'how's Tenisha doing?' Nothing.
Nobody should be sending their child, their daughter, their cousin, their niece to the hospital thinking it's safe, and they're not going to come home.
It's like, my other half is gone. I just want my daughter back. That was my best friend.
We assure the public that our organization continually monitors patient outcomes and strives to improve our services.
