Protesters outside a New Jersey migrant detention center alleged that US immigration agents used pepper spray and batons during a demonstration early Monday. Demonstrators tried to stop ICE from transferring Martin Soto, who announced a hunger and work strike at Delaney Hall in Newark. Officials said Soto was moved to the Elizabeth contract detention facility. Protesters had gathered since Friday and tensions rose late Sunday when they heard guards planned to move Soto. The strike demands immediate release of elderly and young detainees and those with medical conditions. Soto’s wife, Gabriela, reported seeing him pushed into a van and said the crowd blocked the entrance and roadway to prevent transfer.
"I was banging on the door of the van, she told the news outlet. I was not letting that happen. They were pulling and dragging him into the van, she also told CBS News. He was banging on the window. He was screaming and banging on the window. That's why everyone here is blocking it because they're not going to let my husband be deported or sent away."
