Bishop Challoner School in Bromley, southeast London, has announced its closure due to a significant decrease in pupil numbers attributed to the introduction of VAT on school fees, alongside other financial pressures like rising living costs and diminished business rates relief. Established for 75 years, the Catholic school will shut down at the end of the academic year. Parents and teachers have expressed deep emotional turmoil over this closure, particularly those with children facing critical exams and those with special educational needs adapting to a new environment.
When I went in yesterday, one teacher came out and gave me a hug and was crying. She said I have been here for 33 years.
My daughter has special education needs (SEN) and her biggest issue is social interaction and friendships. It's going to be a massive, traumatic adjustment.
