A recent advisory from NYC's Department of Transportation warns drivers of a parking meter scam aimed at stealing credit card information through fraudulent QR codes affixed to ParkNYC meters. At least one fraudulent sticker was discovered, directing users to a questionable webpage for payment. Officials stress that payments should only be made via the official ParkNYC app or physical meters. The scam has prompted citywide inspections of meters, and individuals are encouraged to report suspicious QR codes and to notify their banks if compromised.
According to the DOT, at least one fraudulent sticker with a QR code was illegally placed on the side of a meter in the city, directing users to a third-party webpage asking for their credit card information.
The only way to pay for metered parking in NYC is through the official ParkNYC app or on a physical ParkNYC parking meter.
Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez urged anyone who sees a QR code on a parking meter to tear it off and report it by calling 212-839-7100 or emailing parknyc@flowbirdapp.com.
If you see a QR code on a parking meter, do not scan it and please report it.
