Parents of nursery abuse victims to meet minister
"Chan was able to commit his crimes because safeguarding failed. We believe these failures created the perfect hunting ground for a predator. We want accountability for all failures, and we are determined to make sure other children are protected from similar harm."
"We have only recently begun investigating what happened at Bright Horizons Finchley Road Nursery but already we are hearing from parents that they raised concerns about staffing and supervision and the concerning way that the individual perpetrator was interacting with children; however, these concerns were not addressed."
Vincent Chan, a former nursery employee at Bright Horizons in West Hampstead, was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment for sexually abusing children in his care. Families of victims are meeting with Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson to advocate for comprehensive safeguarding reforms. They contend that systemic failures enabled Chan's abuse and created conditions for predatory behavior. The families, represented by law firm Leigh Day on behalf of 52 affected families, are calling for an independent early-warning system allowing parents and whistleblowers to report concerns, mandatory two-adult supervision in larger settings, body-worn video use, and stronger protections regarding nursery-owned devices. Parents report raising concerns about staffing and supervision that were not addressed.
