Following a tragic helicopter crash in New York City's Hudson River that claimed the lives of six individuals, including a family of five, the FAA announced the immediate shutdown of New York Helicopter Tours. This operator was under investigation, particularly due to the absence of flight data recording equipment on their aircraft. Senator Chuck Schumer has emphasized the need for stringent safety measures and oversight, citing the company's history of negligence and a concerning track record of incidents involving helicopter tours in New York City.
The tour operator was already the subject of an investigation from the National Transportation Safety Board, which said that the doomed helicopter was not equipped with any flight data recording equipment.
Senator Chuck Schumer highlighted the deadly track record of New York City's helicopter tour companies, stating, "Eleven people killed in the last few years, and it is usually the companies, not the pilots, that are openly manipulating FAA rules, cutting corners and could well be putting profits over people."
