During a high school graduation ceremony in Paterson, NJ, over 150 attendees fell ill due to extreme heat, leading local officials to declare a state of emergency. Many were treated on-site, with several hospitalized for dehydration. Despite the implemented precautionary measures, such as cooling stations and EMTs, the event revealed lapses as school officials were sheltered under tents while attendees endured the sweltering sun. Proactive measures have been put in place in response to the heat wave, and all recreational activities in the city have been temporarily suspended.
As a result of the "mass casualty event," proactive measures have been taken in the city until the heat wave ends, hopefully by Wednesday night.
In anticipation of high temperatures, the district implemented numerous precautionary measures to help keep everyone safe, including on-site EMTs, cooling stations, and cold bottled water.
