"Why God keeps taking my children. Why don't he take me? Why he takes them? This is a child. That's my child ... my flesh of my flesh, blood of my blood. Now it's finished."
"We were going back home and now I'm hurt and not only did he hit my son ... he hit him. I banged on the car ... and then I got hit, too. How do you run over a child? Something gotta be wrong with you because you ain't gonna win."
"Zachariah, let me tell you what he said, he said, 'Mother, God has a lot of children. He said 'I'm an angel.' That was a boy they kept working on. They [didn't] want to give up on him."
Zachariah Padilla, a 4-year-old from Brooklyn, was struck by a Ford SUV and run over in a hit-and-run incident Thursday morning shortly after leaving Brookdale Hospital with his mother. The vehicle fled the scene, leaving the child critically injured. He was rushed back into the hospital where medical staff performed chest compressions for 30 minutes before he succumbed to his injuries. This tragedy represents the second devastating loss for his mother, Harmonie Wright, who previously lost her oldest son, Elijah Wright, 21, to gun violence last year. Wright expressed her grief and called for justice, stating her family will bury both sons together.
