Kashanna Legette, a 22-year-old Bronx resident, experienced sudden labor at 38 weeks pregnant when her water broke while napping. Unable to reach the hospital due to intense contractions, her sister flagged down NYPD officers from the 42nd Precinct. The officers assisted Legette through delivery on a discarded couch near her apartment building, coaching her through breathing and pushing while neighbors watched from windows and streets. She successfully delivered a healthy 7-pound, 11-ounce baby girl. Officer Roddmy Remy removed his jacket to swaddle the newborn in the cold February air. The experience positively shifted Legette's perception of police officers.
