A 54-year-old man from Newmarket was sentenced to one year of conditional imprisonment for making threats against a mosque and his Muslim neighbor's home. He will serve two-thirds of the sentence under house arrest and is prohibited from living in Newmarket or being within 100 meters of any mosque in Canada. The man was arrested after a hate-motivated incident reported on September 1, 2025, and pleaded guilty to two counts of uttering threats on March 18. Police emphasized that hate has no place in York Region.
