Protests continued Saturday outside Delaney Hall immigration detention center in Newark, New Jersey, as a hunger and labor strike inside reached its ninth day. Detained immigrants demanded improved conditions and medical care. A small group of rightwing counterprotesters in Trump hats demonstrated outside, waving signs and chanting in support of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Supporters of detained immigrants and ICE supporters yelled at each other across state police barricades. Friday night included state police firing teargas canisters and pepper ball pellets at anti-ICE protesters and arriving on horseback to drive protesters back. New Jersey governor Mikie Sherrill announced state officials would take over policing outside the facility from ICE and state police attempted to set up fences for a protected speech zone. Homeland Security secretary Markwayne Mullin praised Sherrill’s cooperation and posted support for peaceful protest while opposing riot and assault.
