The New York City Department of Health recently reported that overdoses have become the leading cause of pregnancy-associated deaths, making up 34.5% of such deaths in 2021. In response, a new City Council measure aims to tackle this urgent public health issue, focusing on opioid use disorder. The proposed legislation would initiate an educational campaign for healthcare providers while also expanding naloxone availability at community health centers. The goal is to decrease maternal mortality rates, particularly among Black New Yorkers who are disproportionately affected.
Overdose-related deaths during or after pregnancy are preventable... we need to destigmatize this medical condition and get people to realize that this is a public health issue.
This is something that the city can invest in. We can prevent this... reducing maternal mortality has been a priority in recent years.
