Exclusive | Dog owners at hipster NYC park warned about prickly weeds that could hurt pups
Briefly

In Bushwick's Maria Hernandez Park, dog owners are alarmed about the invasive foxtail grass, which poses a risk to pets due to its barbed seeds that can injure their skin, eyes, and lungs. Residents have reported incidents of dogs being hurt by the grass, yet despite expressing their concerns to the city, the problem persists. While NYC Parks maintains the weed is under control, owners feel more awareness and intervention is necessary, suggesting community action to tackle the issue, highlighting the responsibility of both the city and local pet owners.
Last year a foxtail seed barb got lodged in our dog's inner eyelid and scratched her cornea, " resident Jasmine Colahan posted on Instagram.
There should be more awareness and maybe a sign for owners," Morrison said. "It's up to us to form a group and do it ourselves. The park's not going to do this, it's our responsibility as well."
Since then, the foxtail grass has spread considerably throughout the park," the volunteer told The Post.
We work to manage it whenever it appears in our parks through regular cutting and trimming," the spokesperson said.
