On the first day of voting for New York City's elected parent councils, the Education Department had to pause the online voting system to address "technical issues" that arose. Parents reported various glitches, including incorrect ballots with names of candidates not running. Frustrated candidates, such as Alejandro Epifanio Torres, expressed disappointment over the setbacks, particularly following a previous election cycle where only 2% turnout was recorded. Department officials assured that a vendor was resolving the issues to ensure a fair voting process before resuming the election.
It's just extremely disappointing because we've been working so hard to have our school parent community be involved in this process, said Alejandro Epifanio Torres, an elementary school parent running for the council in District 1.
In the interest of ensuring a fair and accurate process, we have temporarily paused voting, Department spokesperson Onika Richards said. We are working diligently to resolve any issues.
