California sues Trump administration for cutting teacher training over 'illegal DEI'
Briefly

California, alongside seven other Democratic states, has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration in an effort to prevent significant funding cuts to teacher training programs. These programs aim to bolster the number of educators in STEM fields and support students with disabilities or those learning English. The cuts amount to approximately $148 million in California alone. Critics, including educators, argue that this decision is detrimental to students and represents a betrayal of educational commitments. The cuts have sparked a strong rebuke regarding their impacts on educational equity.
The cut "isn't just a policy change. It's a betrayal of students, teachers and our communities," said A.Dee Williams, a Cal State L.A. educator professor.
In announcing the grant cuts, the Department of Education said the programs use taxpayer funds to "train teachers and education agencies on divisive ideologies".
