As homelessness rises among NYC kids, report finds most struggle to make it to school
""Education is the best tool we have to prevent future homelessness, and only bold leadership from City Hall can bring the urgency and coordination needed to ensure students who are homeless can get to school every day and access the educational support they need to thrive.""
""The analysis found one in five students living in shelters transferred schools at least once during the year, further complicating their educational stability and success.""
In the 2024-2025 academic year, approximately 154,000 students in New York City public schools were homeless, marking a record high. The analysis revealed that 49% of students in temporary housing missed at least one out of every 10 school days, with the rate rising to 63% for those in shelters. Homeless students also performed poorly academically, with less than 33% proficient in reading and 35% in math, compared to around 60% among their housed peers. Advocates emphasize the need for urgent action to support these students.
