Alexia Couyutas Duarte, a recent Swarthmore College graduate and aspiring Supreme Court justice, was set to attend Harvard Law School in 2025. Described by her family as ambitious and goal-oriented, she embodied a spirit of high aspirations. Tragically, she and her partner Jared Groff, along with Groff's family members, died in a plane crash while traveling for a Passover celebration. This sudden loss has left her family heartbroken, reflecting on the impact of their lives and the drastic change they now face without her.
"It was not just the good thing. It was the amazing thing. It was the exceptional thing," her eldest sibling Maria Claudia Couyutas Duarte said. That was her sister's way of setting goals. Reach higher.
"She would make those things happen," she said. It wasn't just like, 'Let me do this one thing. I'll do the most amazing one possible.'
Life was good. Then, suddenly, it turned tragic.
Maria Claudia's voice quivers and sobs as she reflects on past conversations with her siblings as each grew into the demands of adulthood and how life for the family is forever changed.
