"The exhibition utilizes large-scale photographs, never-before-seen digital renderings and data-driven soundscapes to recreate the sights and sounds of the pre-colonial era."
"The deeply immersive experience contrasts the modern street grid with the original terrain, with soundscapes that reconstruct historical bird calls and environmental echoes."
""The natural history of our own backyard has so much to teach us," says Dr. Sanderson. "It is my hope that this exhibition will... inspire everyone who sees it to champion the conservation of nature into the future.""
The New York Botanical Garden will launch 'Before New York,' a traveling exhibition that showcases the region's ecological diversity before urbanization. Based on 25 years of research by Dr. Eric W. Sanderson, the exhibition recreates the landscape of 1609, featuring large-scale photographs, digital renderings, and soundscapes. It will debut in the Bronx and travel across all five boroughs until Autumn 2026. The exhibition aims to inspire conservation efforts through immersive experiences, public lectures, and guided tours focused on neighborhood restoration.
