It was driven by musicians, filmmakers, and visual artists and was described as brutal and chaotic. Adele Bertei helped shape the scene through keyboard work with The Contortions, acting in underground films, and founding The Bloods, an all-lesbian band that openly proclaimed identity. Women played a remarkable role, including Bertei introducing groups to Brian Eno while working as his assistant. Eno selected four bands and included them on No New York, an album he produced that spread the movement beyond its epicenter.
