Kolstein's Music, a violin shop in Baldwin, Long Island, which has been operating since the 1940s, has seemingly closed due to a legal feud between founder Barrie Kolstein's family and the current owner, Manny Alvarez. Kolstein alleges that Alvarez, who took over the business in 2019, has taken instruments including a valuable bass violin without proper compensation. Kolstein expressed deep sorrow over the circumstances, emphasizing the shop's international respect and his family's legacy tied to its history. The situation remains unresolved as their legal battle continues.
I worked my whole life in this shop. My father put his whole life into this shop, it's internationally well-respected and in almost five and a half years the shop is no more.
It's just such a sad situation. I didn't want this for him. I didn't want this for my shop. I didn't want this for my clients. It's heartbreaking.
