Bruce Springsteen made remarks during a Wednesday night appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, taking jabs at the president and his associates. CBS announced cancellation of the show in July and said the reason was financial rather than political. Many observers questioned that explanation because the cancellation came days after Colbert criticized Paramount for agreeing to a $16 million settlement with Donald Trump. Colbert described the situation as a “Big Fat Bribe” while Paramount sought approval for a merger with Skydance. Springsteen told the audience Colbert lost the show because the president could not take a joke and said Skydance backers needed to appease him to get their way. He added that the people involved were small-minded and lacked understanding of the country’s freedoms.
"“I'm here in support tonight for Stephen, because you are the first guy in America who has lost his show because we got a president who can't take a joke,” Springsteen told the audience, “and because Larry and David Ellison [who control and fund Skydance and are known Trumpers] feel they need to kiss his ass to get what they want.”"
"“Stephen, these are small-minded people,” Springsteen said. “They got no idea what the freedoms of this beautiful country are supposed to be about.”"
"CBS announced it was canceling the show in July and has maintained the decision was financial and not at all political. But many people don't buy it, given that the cancellation was announced only a few days after Colbert slammed CBS's parent company, Paramount, for agreeing to a $16 million settlement with Donald Trump."
"Colbert called it a "Big Fat Bribe" since Paramount was in the midst of petitioning the Trump administration for approval of its merger with Skydance."
