The 2025 Yerba Buena Gardens Festival marks its 25th anniversary with a diverse lineup of free performances in music, theater, dance, and more. Opening on May 10, 2025, with the band La Santa Cecilia, the Festival emphasizes community engagement and access to the arts. A notable highlight is the world premiere of Sammay Peñaflor Dizon's performance titled 'the way home is an upwards spiral.' This contemporary work explores street dance forms while addressing themes of bodily sovereignty and identity intersectionality, showcasing the rich cultural fabric of the Bay Area.
"I believe that art serves to heal, transform and liberate marginalized communities and ultimately our planet," Dizon says.
"As an artist living at the intersection of marginalized identities, I center the practices and people that have the inherent access to the embodied knowledge our world so direly needs."
