Fifteen-year-old Ethan Liao, a burgeoning musical talent from San Francisco, recently gained national acclaim after winning the Jazz at Lincoln Center's student composition contest. His original composition, 'By Candlelight,' will be performed by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in New York City, marking his second prestigious performance this year, following his showcase at Carnegie Hall. With a background steeped in musical influence from family, Liao expresses gratitude for his early exposure to classical music and its impact on his artistic development. He is set to participate in a recording session as part of this exciting opportunity.
Liao explains, "One of my first memories, and my first memory about music, is listening to my grandma sing opera in the car... That's one of my first memories."
Reflecting on his early exposure to music, Liao states, "I was exposed to a lot of classical music when I was pretty young. I didn't always love to hear it, but looking back, I'm really, really glad that my parents brought me to performances."
