MUNA keeps the queer dance party going just in time for summer - Queerty
MUNA, an L.A.-based queer pop trio, released Dancing on the Wall, a new album featuring shimmering synth-driven dance songs timed for summer. The title track arrived as a single in February and is described as one of the band’s favorite songs, coming from an emotional and lonely place while creating feelings of power and euphoria. “Wannabeher” leans toward a grungier rock sound while remaining built for dancing, and it was co-written by Leland, a songwriter from RuPaul’s Drag Race. Gavin connects the band’s energy to feminist punk icons. The album is their fourth and first since 2022, marking a reunion after Gavin’s 2024 solo debut, and includes a retro ’80s video for “Eastside Girls.”
"“It's all the best parts of MUNA,” they added. “Coming from a really emotional and lonely place, but the song itself makes us feel powerful and euphoric.” The band's dance music not only makes you move your feet, but also moves your heart. The single “Wannabeher” (co-written by RuPaul's Drag Race songwriter Leland) is a sapphic banger that finds the band leaning towards a grungier rock sound. But like most MUNA samples, it's still primed to get the girls and gays on their feet."
"Speaking with Elle magazine, Gavin said the track pays homage to icons of the feminist punk movement. “That energy is really woven into our DNA,” she added. “We owe so much to those people.” Dancing on the Wall is MUNA's fourth album and first since their 2022 self-titled LP. It's release also marks a reunion for the group after Gavin went solo in 2024 with her debut What a Relief."
"Along with their new LP, MUNA shared a retro '80s music video for the song “Eastside Girls,” which fits the track's throbbing synthy dance vibe and features their famous friends, including queer Hacks star Hannah Einbinder. One of MUNA's first major breakthroughs was their 2022 sapphic anthem Silk Chiffon, featuring indie singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers. Its iconic music video that was inspired by the LGBTQ+ '90s film But I'm a Cheerleader."
"MUNA has been keeping the queer party thriving this year. With their new album Dancing on the Wall, the gayest group in pop music has fed us a string of shimmering, synthy bops just in time for summer. The L.A.-based trio - made up of Katie Gavin, Josette Maskin, and Naomi McPherson - dropped their first new single, the album's title track, back in February, describing it to NME as one of their favorite songs they've ever made."
