Luigi Mangione, accused of assassinating UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, is contesting conditions of his court appearances. His lawyer argues that shackles and a bulletproof vest contribute to a false perception of him being highly dangerous. Citing Mangione's behavior as a 'model prisoner' and his favorable conduct in court, his attorney urges the court to allow him to appear in appropriate clothing, arguing that the current requirements only emphasize a narrative of extraordinary threat against him, which may not reflect reality. Mangione is facing serious criminal charges, including potential life sentences and federal death penalty threats.
Forcing the 27-year-old accused killer to continue appearing with his hands cuffed and sporting the vest will 'perpetuate a false narrative that Mr. Mangione is an unusual danger requiring extraordinary security measures,' his lawyer Karen Friedman Agnifilo wrote in a legal filing.
Mangione has pleaded not guilty to state charges that carry a sentence of up to life in prison, and to separate federal charges that threaten him with the death penalty.
