"You can't imagine how insane it is to hear these songs performed by people so talented. I've always been right in the middle of the songs, so to hear them is really fucking surreal."
"It may have been nearly 20 years since performing the tracks "These Days" (from Lifes Rich Pageant) and "The Great Beyond" (from the Man on the Moon soundtrack), but he sounded at home, gliding along the instruments with his signature vocal stylings."
Michael Stipe joined actor Michael Shannon and musician Jason Narducy onstage at Brooklyn Steel in New York City to perform R.E.M.'s "These Days" and "The Great Beyond," marking his first live performance of these songs in 18 years. Shannon and Narducy are touring the United States with an R.E.M. tribute celebrating the 40th anniversary of Lifes Rich Pageant. Stipe expressed how surreal it felt hearing his songs performed by talented musicians, noting he had always been central to the songs. Despite the long gap, Stipe delivered the performances with his signature vocal style. This appearance follows his previous participation at the 40 Watt Club in Athens, Georgia, where he appeared with his R.E.M. bandmates together for the first time in 17 years.
