Lea Michele, Aaron Tveit, and Nicolas Christopher will star in a revival of the musical Chess on Broadway in 2025. Tveit plays Freddie Trumper, Michele his second Florence Vassey, while Christopher portrays Anatoly Sergievsky. Originally flopping in 1988 with just 68 performances, the musical is known for its score, including the hit "One Night in Bangkok." The revival will feature a new book by Danny Strong, with director Michael Mayer reuniting with Michele. It is set to open in fall 2025 at a yet-to-be-announced Shubert Theatre.
"The evening has the theatrical consistency of quicksand," Frank Rich wrote in the New York Times, "and the drab color scheme to match."
"Chess features a score by Tim Rice alongside ABBA's Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, gaining popularity despite its initial flop in 1988."
