The Brooklyn Daily Eagle highlighted significant news events on this day in 1857 and 1859, focusing on military and defense matters. In 1857, General Scott was welcomed in Boston to attend the Bunker Hill celebration, underscoring the integration of military figures in public recognition. In 1859, Major Barnard reported on necessary improvements to New York's harbor defenses, emphasizing the need for multiple fortifications at Staten Island, Long Island, and along the East River to bolster security against maritime threats. These projections underscored the importance of military readiness in an era of potential conflict.
General Scott is to receive an official welcome to Boston on the occasion of his visit to that city on the 17th inst., to attend the celebration at Bunker Hill. Governor Gardner has ordered out the First Brigade to escort him to the State House, where he will be officially received on behalf of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
In order to secure us from maritime intrusion, we need on Staten Island beside Fort Richmond, now nearly finished, the completion of Fort Tompkins, recently commenced, the construction of another casemated battery south of Fort Richmond, and an extension of the eastern batteries.
These fortifications, including Sandy Hook, would cost $4,000,000. The narrow passage around Staten Island, through the Kills, should also be protected by the shore works.
The works on Long Island must also be enlarged by extending batteries either open or casemated along the bluff below Fort Hamilton, and Fort Lafayette must be remodeled.
