The New York art fair Independent is set to relocate to Pier 36 on the Lower East Side in 2026, significantly increasing its space to 50,000 square feet. This move responds to increased gallery participation post-pandemic, improving accessibility and proximity to other art events. Founder Elizabeth Dee emphasizes that while Independent has evolved since its 2010 inception, focusing now on a broader spectrum of artists, its core mission remains focused on promoting innovative and under-recognized talent. Architectural redesign will be managed by a reputed firm, promoting a fresh presentation of art.
In 2025, Independent hosted 83 exhibitors in spaces that included skyboxes and repurposed utility rooms. 'Even our coat check was given over to a special project,' said Elizabeth Dee.
According to Dee, aligning more directly with the city's spring fair circuit is a deliberate step toward increasing both attendance and institutional relevance.
