Kyle Abraham's 'When We Fell' is set to premiere at New York City Ballet from May 16-24, following nearly five years of development. Initially commissioned after Abraham's success with 'The Runaway' in 2018, the project faced delays due to the pandemic. During an early 2021 residency at Kaatsbaan Cultural Park, the dancers, rejuvenated by their time away and the challenges faced, collaborated creatively with Abraham, leading to a sense of community and exploration that informed the final work.
In the early days of the pandemic, I was still in Los Angeles... I didnât want to show up and not be ready to go.
One of the things I remember the most was the open-mindedness... It was truly a beautiful exchange.
