The production’s final performance is scheduled for Sunday, June 21 at the Imperial Theatre, with Lea Michele continuing as Florence Vassy. Producers had planned for Joanna “JoJo” Levesque to begin the role on June 23, with tickets available through Sept. 13, but the show will close two days before her first scheduled performance. JoJo posted on Instagram that she was supposed to start rehearsals that day. The earlier closure suggests producers avoided testing whether the show could continue amid declining box office grosses. The revival opened in fall with high expectations for a Cold War love-triangle musical featuring ABBA’s Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus music and Tim Rice lyrics, plus a new book by Danny Strong. Despite widely admired vocal performances, Strong’s book drew criticism for not fixing persistent storytelling issues. The show earned five Tony nominations, including acting nods for Nicholas Christopher, Bryce Pinkham, and Hannah Cruz, but lost Best Revival of a Musical, and Michele was not nominated for Best Actress in a Musical.
