Bargemusic, a classical music organization that spent fifty years aboard a barge, has transitioned to a new venue at Brooklyn Bridge Park. The inaugural concert featured Mendelssohn and Beethoven music performed by artistic director Mark Peskanov and other musicians, despite dreary weather. The barge was deemed unsafe and expensive to repair, leading to its removal. Eric Landau of Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation offered the boathouse location, fulfilling Bargemusic's long-standing vision. The upcoming season promises robust programming with numerous concerts scheduled, maintaining its legacy of showcasing emerging classical artists.
"I couldn't believe it, you know, the first concert - a full house. That was very nice to see," Peskanov exclaimed.
"We were kind of dreaming about it,' Peskanov said. 'Wouldn't it be great if we continued our concerts in Brooklyn Bridge Park?"
"In January, Bargemusic hit rough water. Despite careful maintenance, the 126-year-old boat had become unsafe. Repairs would be very expensive," Peskanov noted.
"Many classical artists who went on to join prestigious orchestras, win awards, and become household names performed at the venue early in their careers," Peskanov shared.
