Peter Luger Steak House Just Unveiled Its Own Jagermeister-Inspired Spirit-and It's Very Good
"Peter Luger started out as a German beer hall in 1887, so it makes sense that its first custom-made amaro would be inspired by Jägermeister, which is a classic German digestif liqueur. The recipe for Jäger contains a total of 56 different botanicals, many of which are not revealed, but Lugermeister is a bit simpler than that-in terms of its recipe, not its flavor."
"Faccia Brutto calls it a 'German-style amaro (or Kräuterlikör)' that is made from a base neutral grain spirit sourced from upstate New York. That spirit is macerated for two weeks with 21 botanicals including poppy seed, gentian, juniper berry, kola nut, licorice root, and sarsaparilla. Then the spirit is sweetened and diluted to 30 percent ABV (60 proof), and is meant to be enjoyed alongside a steak."
Peter Luger, a historic Brooklyn steakhouse founded as a German beer hall in 1887, partnered with Faccia Brutto, a local amaro producer established in 2020, to develop Lugermeister. This custom spirit draws inspiration from Jägermeister, the classic German digestif liqueur. Lugermeister is crafted from a neutral grain spirit base sourced from upstate New York, macerated for two weeks with 21 botanicals including poppy seed, gentian, juniper berry, kola nut, licorice root, and sarsaparilla. The final product is sweetened and diluted to 30 percent ABV (60 proof), designed to complement steaks and other restaurant offerings. Faccia Brutto founder Patrick Smith, a former chef, considers Lugermeister among their finest creations.
