Four individuals, including a minor, were caught in Queens attempting to steal a swan from a public park, sparking fears it might be linked to animal sacrifices or a misguided prank. Activists noted a troubling history of similar incidents where swans were sacrificed or consumed. The situation has heightened concerns following previous cases of swan killings in New York. Local authorities have stepped up patrols to deter such acts, although the number of incidents has decreased recently. The missing swan had recently given birth, raising further emotional stakes for her mate left behind.
"There have been numerous animal sacrifices [in the area], it's been an ongoing problem," Edita Birnkrant, executive director of animal advocacy group NYCLASS, said.
"In the past, [swans have] been taken by unhoused people to eat in NYC," said John Di Leonardo, executive director of Humane Long Island. However, he added, "that doesn't appear to be the case here."
