The annual Met Gala turned heads this year, kicking off a star-studded night at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Chef Kwame Onwuachi faced unique challenges from Vogue's Anna Wintour, crafting a menu devoid of certain ingredients, while showcasing a rich blend of cuisine inspired by Black culture. Onwuachi's dishes included papaya piri piri salad and Creole-roasted chicken, designed to honor the galaâs theme 'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,' which focused on the significance of men's fashion. His self-styled, sleek look matched the event's extravagance and sentiment.
âI wanted to really capture Black culture in all of its elements,â Onwuachi told BET. âFrom the diaspora to the Caribbean to the American South, even to just the boroughs in New York.â
Anna Wintour handed the Top Chef star one big quick-fire challenge: cook with no garlic, onions, or chives... three things I'm not particularly fond of.â
As a honoree and owner of the New York Times' No. 1 restaurant in NYC, with a newly announced Vegas project on the way, the Bronx native was well-suited for the job.
The gala's theme 'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style' marked the first time in decades that men's fashion stole the spotlight.
