Cape Town has been confirmed as the host city for WorldPride 2028, marking a historic first for the event in Africa. The decision followed a voting process in MedellÃn, Colombia, with Cape Town receiving 53% of the votes, surpassing Guadalajara's 44%. Cape Town Pride's chief executive expressed enthusiasm for the support from the global LGBTQ+ community, reflecting South Africa's unique constitutional recognition of LGBTQ rights on the continent. However, opposition arose from local religious leaders criticizing the Pride event, highlighting the mixed sentiments within the country regarding LGBTQ+ initiatives.
The news was confirmed by WorldPride Cape Town, whose website reads: "It is official." The South African capital polled 53% of the vote, winning over Guadalajara.
"This is a first for the whole continent of Africa," said Cape Town Pride's chief executive Tommy Patterson. "We are thrilled by the news and support shown by the global LGBTI+ family."
Michael Gladwin stated: "We couldn't be more excited to welcome the global LGBTQ+ community to our beautiful city, showcasing Cape Town as a beacon of inclusivity."
Reverend Oscar Bougardt sharply criticized the event, calling it 'garbage and filth,' and urged others to express their opposition to WorldPride being held in Cape Town.
