The Jane Gallery, located in Old City, Philadelphia, is dedicated to showcasing female and queer artists, addressing the stark underrepresentation of women in museums. Opened in October 2024, the gallery features a rotating monthly artist exhibit. For Women's History Month, artist Nataliya Yermolenko presents her solo exhibit, "Icons, Influence & You," blending her inspirations with community-submitted portraits of everyday heroes, including iconic women like Frida Kahlo, Maya Angelou, and Marilyn Monroe, creating a dialogue between historical influences and contemporary voices.
"Seventeen percent of all artists in museums are women. It's only 17 percent, which is just--it's just bananas," says owner Alison Mustokoff.
"The initial body of work is made up of things that inspired me as an artist," says Yermolenko.
She also invited the community to submit photos of everyday people who inspired them and created pieces from those photos to tie the body of work together.
Notable icons featured in the exhibit include Frida Kahlo, Maya Angelou, and Marilyn Monroe.
