Staten Island road racing: More than 1,000 athletes compete in 9th Annual SSG Ollis 5K Run & Walk (photos)
Briefly

The 9th Annual SSG Michael Ollis 5K Run & Walk took place in New Dorp, Staten Island, attracting around 1,200 athletes. The event honors U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Michael Ollis, who died in 2013 while protecting a Polish soldier. Originally aiming for just 100 participants, the race has evolved into a significant aspect of the Staten Island running community and is now part of the Staten Island Triple Crown. Significant contributions have been made by local organizations to support the foundation behind the event.
The growing popularity of the event has meant the world to Ollis' parents, Linda and Bob, whose original goal of getting 100 runners together has been far exceeded.
Staten Island has supported us and Michael ever since his passing; between the building of his memorial at Petrides to the race here on New Dorp Lane, it's been fantastic.
