Salt Lake City and Boise adopt official pride flags to skirt Republican bans
Briefly

In response to legislative bans on flying rainbow pride flags on government property in Utah and Idaho, Salt Lake City and Boise mayors have creatively adopted new city flags. Salt Lake City’s proposal integrates the sego lily design with pride, trans, and Juneteenth flags, symbolizing the city's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Similarly, Boise's mayor retroactively proclaimed the pride flag as an official city flag. These reactions highlight ongoing tensions surrounding LGBTQ+ rights amidst broader conservative pushback in the U.S.
Our city flags are powerful symbols representing Salt Lake City's values... to look up at these flags and be reminded that we value diversity, equity and inclusion.
The newly adopted city flags are a direct reaction to Utah's House Bill 77... that narrowed the list of allowable flags to the state flag, the US flag, college flags, tribal flags, and military flags.
