During his acceptance speech for the Chaplin Award, Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar defended trans actress Hunter Schafer against what he described as President Trump's 'authoritarian' policies towards the transgender community. Speaking at the Lincoln Center in New York, Almodóvar criticized the Trump administration for its dismissal of trans rights, exemplified by Schafer’s experience with her passport identifying her gender as male. He emphasized the need for recognition of gender diversity and celebrated Schafer's identity despite bureaucratic limitations.
Hunter Schafer, the wonderful co-protagonist with Zendaya of Euphoria, is a woman even though she was assigned with the [marker] M for male while renewing her passport.
I admit that there have been moments when I have doubted about coming to accept [the Chaplin award], I have doubted if it was appropriate to come to a country ruled by a narcissistic, authoritarian lunatic who doesn't respect human rights.
