'Out' publisher acquires Conde Nast's 'them' following sweeping layoffs - LGBTQ Nation
"Equalpride exists to elevate, celebrate and protect LGBTQ+ storytelling at scale. By combining the strengths of our brands with this respected digital platform, we're creating a unified ecosystem that delivers even more impact for our audiences, advertisers, and community partners."
"Adding the Them brand accelerates our mission and expands the ways we can champion LGBTQ+ voices year‑round. This is about scale with purpose. Together, we're building the most trusted, far‑reaching LGBTQ+ media network in the world that honors our history while innovating for the future."
"Them stood out both as Condé Nast's first and only LGBTQ+ publication and one of the few digital-only publications in the storied publisher's portfolio of glossy magazines. Its content has also been notable for foregrounding the stories and work of queer people of color and the trans community."
Equalpride, publisher of Out and The Advocate, acquired Condé Nast's Them, an LGBTQ+ news and culture website launched in 2017. The acquisition aims to create a unified media ecosystem combining the strengths of Equalpride's existing brands with Them's respected digital platform. CEO Mark Berryhill stated the move accelerates their mission to champion LGBTQ+ voices and build the most trusted LGBTQ+ media network. Them, founded by former editor-in-chief Phillip Picardi, has been notable for centering queer people of color and trans community stories. Currently led by transgender editor-in-chief Fran Tirado since March 2023, the acquisition follows recent layoffs across Equalpride's publications.
