Out former CDC vaccines head Demetre Daskalakis named chief medical officer at NYC LGBTQ+ health center
"New York City is home for me, and my number one professional objective right now is to make sure that the full breadth of the LGBTQ+ community has a strong medical home,"
"the obvious wellspring"
"very respectfully"
"'enough is enough'"
Dr. Demetre Daskalakis will assume the role of chief medical officer at Callen-Lorde Community Health Center in New York City beginning in February. He previously directed the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases and resigned from the CDC in August after CDC director Susan Monarez was ousted by the Trump administration; Daskalakis was later escorted out of the building. The new position returns him to the institution where he first trained as a young physician. Daskalakis prioritized ensuring the full breadth of the LGBTQ+ community has a strong medical home. Callen-Lorde cared for more than 22,000 patients across roughly 156,000 visits in 2024.
