NYC's Middle Collegiate Church, destroyed in massive fire in 2020, holds its own resurrection Mass on Easter Sunday
Briefly

Middle Collegiate Church in New York's East Village reopened on Easter Sunday, celebrating its revival after being destroyed by a fire in December 2020. The church, over 128 years old, was lost due to a 6-alarm fire affecting the building next door. The reopening was a moment of joy and symbolic of their journey of grief and restoration. Key features of the revived sanctuary include New York's Liberty Bell, which survived the blaze. Parishioners expressed their relief and joy about returning home to continue their ministry within the restored space.
There is nothing like watching your church burning down. It's frightening -- a six-alarm fire. It's shocking and so the grief of these last four and a half years doesn't really dissipate right. I say, we're always in the fire a little bit.
To be back in this space for this resurrection day is incredibly symbolic of our own rising. We have risen from the ashes and are back in our space doing the ministry that we love doing.
