New York City plans to close three migrant resource centers next month due to a decrease in the number of new arrivals and lack of state funding. Locations in Midtown, Times Square, and the Bronx will be affected. Mayor Eric Adams' administration had requested an additional $1 billion in funding, which was denied by Governor Kathy Hochul. Although approximately 38,000 migrants remain in the city's shelter system, state officials assert that the city has sufficient funds already available to it. Overall, the city is set to reduce its shelter beds significantly over the coming years.
We are disappointed to have to make the difficult decision to close a resource center that has allowed us to provide assistance on over 109,000 applications.
A spokesperson for Hochul told Gothamist that the City has more than $2 billion from the state that they have yet to draw from, which is why this year's budget did not include additional funding.
