NYC taxis reach historic milestone as 50% of fleet now wheelchair accessible
Briefly

On June 5, the Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) in New York City announced that half of its active taxi fleet, approximately 5,100 vehicles, is now wheelchair accessible. This achievement, resulting from a 2013 settlement with disability advocates, represents the most accessible fleet in the country. TLC Commissioner David Do highlighted the decade-long effort and various initiatives—including a $5 million pilot program and the Medallion Relief Program—to reach this goal, which was delayed partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This achievement has been over a decade in the making, and a tremendous amount of effort has gotten us here, Do said.
We made that today. It is the most accessible fleet in the entire country.
