Brighton Beach Pride, established in 2017 by RUSA LGBTQ+, has showcased the resilience of queer Russian speakers and allies in Southern Brooklyn. Initially, the event featured both Russian and Rainbow flags, symbolizing a fusion of cultures. However, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the pride event shifted its focus towards supporting Ukraine, prompting RUSA LGBTQ+ to rename itself Qaravan to better represent its inclusive vision, highlighting intersectionality. This transformation underscores a commitment to not only LGBTQ rights but also solidarity against oppression on multiple fronts.
RUSA LGBTQ+, which organized Brighton Beach Pride since 2017, evolved to reflect community needs, changing its name to Qaravan to embrace diversity following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Brighton Beach Pride has united queer Russian speakers and allies against anti-LGBTQ persecution in Russia, transforming its focus over the years to include solidarity with Ukraine.
