In preparation for this year's Met Gala, New York City police are ramping up security measures surrounding the venue due to past disruptions by protesters, including environmental activists. Former detective Michael Alcazar emphasizes the need for extensive preparations, including deploying snipers and creating a 'frozen zone' restricting access to only gala attendees. Anna Wintour has hired additional security following rumors of celebrity appearances. The event's high-profile nature elevates its status as a potential target for protests and other security threats, prompting the NYPD to collaborate with private and potentially federal security forces.
"The NYPD has to be prepared for every eventuality," he said. Snipers will be positioned atop buildings to survey the area, while armed police officers will patrol the streets of New York City.
"The NYPD is good at locking down an area," he said. "No one will be allowed in there unless you're attending the gala."
The frozen zone could span as far as a mile, but it could be expanded. There will be a significant police presence at the event, with local law enforcement working with private security firms and maybe the federal government.
Security officials will be transforming the area around the Metropolitan Museum of Art into a stronghold, ensuring the fashion show is not disrupted.
